Professor Peter Nyarango

Professor of Medicine and Surgery, and founding Dean University of Namibia School of Medicine

Professor Peter Nyarang’o is a distinguished medical professional and academic leader. He earned his MBChB (1977) and Master of Medicine in General Surgery (1983) from the University of Nairobi, followed by a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1994). Prof. Nyarang’o played a pivotal role in transforming Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya and rose to Associate Professor in General Surgery. Over nearly five decades, he has served as a clinician, surgeon, public health expert, and academic leader, holding key positions such as District Medical Officer, head of multiple university departments, and Head of Health Sector Reform Secretariat in Kenya. He has significantly contributed to health sector reforms, including leading the transformation of Kenya’s National Healthcare Financing System into a Social Insurance model. His expertise has been sought in various African countries, including as Founding Dean at the University of Namibia’s School of Medicine, Rector of NITED Polytechnic, and technical advisor for the World Bank and British Council. Prof. Nyarang’o’s research spans surgery, toxins (snake bites), medical education, public health, health systems, cancer, and artificial intelligence, with over 100 publications and two books. He is also associated with the first MPH curriculum in South Africa (University of Western Cape, 1990); the first school of Medicine in Eritrea (2003-2005); Namibia’s School of Medicine (2010-2020) and now IUM School of Medicine. He is the first Secretary General and Founding Member of the Consortium of the New Medical Schools in Southern Africa (CONSAMS – 2011 to 2020). Prof. Nyarang’o is a champion of pan-Africanism and youth empowerment for Africa’s future.
