Prof. Mwapagha is chair-scientific organizer for this inaugural 1st cancer genomics meeting. He is an Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, specializing in cancer genomics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He holds a PhD in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Cape Town and completed postdoctoral training in Cancer Genomics at ICGEB, Cape Town. His research focuses on the genetic and molecular drivers of cancer and the emergence of AMR in clinical settings, using high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatics, and translational approaches to identify biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and enhance AMR surveillance using whole-genome sequencing. Prof. Mwapagha plays a leading role in strengthening genomic research in Africa. He is a member of the technical working group developing Namibia’s Genomics Strategic Plan (2025–2029) and the SIMBA initiative for biosafety and biosecurity. He is a founding member of both the H3Africa Microbiome Task Force and the Africa Public Health Bioinformatics Network (APHBN), and a fellow of the GIBACHT biosecurity training program. Deeply committed to equitable health research and capacity building, he mentors emerging scientists and has led initiatives to integrate genomics into clinical research across low- and middle-income countries. He has published widely, collaborates with both regional and international consortia, and contributes to policy on cancer, biosecurity, and genomic data sharing.
