
Dr. Kgomotso Makhaola is the Senior Science Manager at the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM). In this capacity, she spearheads pan-African initiatives to strengthen laboratory medicine through capacity building and the ethical generation of scientific evidence that shapes policy, drives innovation, and enhances health systems. Dr. Makhaola brings over 20 years of laboratory expertise spanning research, teaching, technical operations, management, and public health. Before joining ASLM, she served as Technical Lead and Senior Public Health Laboratory Advisor at Georgetown University—where she supported the establishment and operationalization of the Botswana Public Health Institute. She has also served as Laboratory Technical Advisor in the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Botswana. Throughout her career, Dr. Makhaola has made invaluable contributions to Botswana’s TB/HIV response, partnering on implementation science studies to inform evidence-based strategies. Her research interests include molecular epidemiology of HIV and human caliciviruses. She holds a PhD and an MSc in Molecular Biology and Virology, a master’s in project management, and a BSc in Medical Technology. She is also a proud Foreign Fulbright Scholar alumna—an honor that underscores her commitment to global collaboration and scientific excellence.
